SHS Cultural Arts Courses

All successfully completed courses earn one semester credit unless otherwise noted. Graduation requirements are broken into required courses and elective courses.  Required courses must be completed by each high school graduate.  Elective courses are those that the student chooses to complete on a career pathway or for college preparation.  

Honors courses are more rigorous than the standard course of study and will earn an additional .5 quality point towards a cumulative GPA.  Honors courses are available through teacher recommendation and by meeting additional prerequisites (see the course descriptions for details). 

Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide students the opportunity to earn college credit through the advanced placement exams taken at the end of the school year.  AP courses will earn one (1) full quality point towards a cumulative GPA.  AP courses are available through teacher recommendation and by meeting additional prerequisites (see the course descriptions for details).   

Community college courses offered through Beaufort County Community College will earn one (1) full quality point towards a cumulative GPA. BCCC courses are available to students who meet certain application requirements. See the Career and College Promise section of the Program of Study for more details.

Visual Arts 
Visual Arts (Beginning) 54152X00SA
Grade Level 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: None
This course introduces the elements and principles of design through art history and art appreciation. Activities emphasize art analysis and critique, exploration of a variety of media, skills and techniques in the following areas: drawing, painting, graphics, 3-dimensional design, and art history.

Visual Arts (Intermediate) 54162X00SB
Grade Level 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Visual Arts (Beginning)
This course offers an in depth study of design through further exploration through art elements and principles through increased study of art history and art appreciation, while expanding technical abilities in drawing, painting, and 3-dimensional design.

Visual Arts (Proficient) 54175X00SA

Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Visual Arts (Intermediate)
This level of advanced art involves more in depth knowledge of processes, media, history, and development of art. Students understand and apply all skills through a variety of media and gain an extensive knowledge of art history.

Journalism I 10312X00SK
Grade Level 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: None
This introductory course is designed for students interested in pursuing additional coursework in journalism, media studies, and communications. Students will build skills in public speaking, writing, asking questions, filming, editing, producing, yearbook design, and ad sales.

Journalism II 10325X00SE
Grade Level 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Journalism I
This honors level course provides students with the opportunity to obtain leadership skills. Students successfully completing this course will be responsible for mentoring and coaching peers, setting and managing deadlines and producing a collaborative product that serves the school and community.

Performing Arts 
Band (Intermediate) 52562X00SC
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Passed middle school band (8th grade) and demonstrated adequate mastery of instrument. 
Students continue to study the fundamentals of music while performing more advanced literature. Aesthetic awareness and technical ability is developed
through a variety of performance opportunities. Extra curricular attendance/participation is not required for this level.

Band (Proficient) Honors 52575X00SB 
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: Band (Intermediate)
Students develop their ability to play with increased technical accuracy and expression. Students play more advanced literature representing diverse genres, styles, and cultures. Success at the honors level requires rigorous study, excellence in performance, extensive knowledge of all areas of music including music theory, and an in-depth study of a variety of advanced music literature. Participation in after-school rehearsals and performances is expected.

Music History  52962X00SB
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: Semester
Prerequisite: None
Students will study the history of rock and roll from 1950 to 1999.  This course will cover current events and technological advances of each decade and learn how they affect the music of the times. Students will also study the biographies of key artists from each decade and learn how the earlier artists influence the later artists. No band experience required.
