Online learning through the North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS)
Before registering for online classes students need to review with their parents the following details and policies regarding NCVPS courses. Please visit www.ncvps.org for more details and course descriptions/information. In order to register you must see your school counselor. We typically do not register students for NCVPS classes that are already offered in person at SHS. NCVPS is not a Beaufort County School. It is a school within its own right, and it is not governed by Beaufort County Schools. Any student who chooses to take an online course comes under the NCVPS Policy.
Student Attendance:
Online learning classes offer more flexibility than traditional face-to-face classes. Students can access their class in the evening and on weekends, as well as during the normal school day. With that flexibility comes responsibility and self-discipline. Students are expected to log in to their classes daily to get the latest assignments and instructions. In addition, students are assigned a class period during the school day during which they are expected to work on these specific class assignments. Attendance in these classes will be taken.
Online Learning Calendar:
Please note that the online learning calendar may be different from the school division’s calendar. Start and stop dates may vary. Students are expected to follow the NCVPS calendar while participating in the NCVPS course. This means if a student will have vacation periods or school breaks during their NCVPS course, they must be sure to notify their NCVPS teacher in advance so alternate arrangements can be made for the submission of work. There are no official school breaks in online learning, but most teachers will be flexible if given advance notice of a student’s absence.

Online Learning Grading Policies:
- Teachers will post a final grade for each student at the end of the course
- Teachers will provide a current grade average for each student regularly
- NCVPS facilitators check current grade averages and also provide NCVPS final grades to SHS
- The method used to calculate student grades is unique to each NCVPS class and is determined by the NCVPS teacher. Teaching styles and grading methods will vary from teacher to teacher.
- Students and parents cannot register themselves for NCVPS classes. Please see your school counselor to determine the best placement. He or she can enroll students in these courses. Students across North Carolina have access to NCVPS courses, and as a result, seats are limited. Enrollment is not guaranteed.
- Students cannot drop a NCVPS course after the drop/add window. Failing to complete the NCVPS course will result in an F for the course.
